Abstract:

The nuclear waste management system provides unique challenges for a large and diverse segment of our society. For the politician there is the blending of national policy and the interests of local and state governments. For the regulatory institution, there is the establishment of standards and processes to provide for public safety and confidence. For the administrator there is the concern for successful execution of system development consistent with cost and schedule requirements. Finally, for the engineer and scientist there is the challenge of designing and constructing a complex system together with achieving a fundamental understanding of the geologic and hydrologic processes at a repository site. The paper presents an approach to regulatory compliance for nuclear waste management systems at repository sites.
