Abstract:

The economic impact of the high level of nuclear repository can be approximated by studying the economic effects of the Nevada Test Site. Using the UNLV Nevada models, we estimated the impact of NTS on employment, gross regional product, and income of Nye County, Clark County, and Nevada. We find that NTS employment multipliers are much greater in Clark County than in Nye County. Approximately seven percent of Nye County employment is attributed to NTS; only two percent of Clark County employment stems from NTS. We predict that the economic impact of a high level nuclear repository will be similar, if different in magnitude, to that of the Nevada Test Site.
