Abstract:

The primary objective of the West Valley Demonstration Project (WVDP) is the solidification of approximately 2.1 million liters (560 thousand gallons) of high-level waste (HLW) which resulted from the operation of a nuclear fuel reprocessing plant. Since the original plant was not built to accommodate the processing of waste beyond storage in underground tanks, HLW solidification by vitrification presented numerous engineering challenges. Existing facilities required redesign and conversion to meet their new purpose. Vitrification technology and systems needed to be created and then tested. However, the scheduled project cleanup completion date made it necessary to devise an original and interesting strategy.
