Abstract:

The Department of Energy (DOE) is in the process of implementing two major elements of the Defense High-Level Radioactive Waste Management Program at two of the DOE production sites, namely Savannah River (SR) and Hanford. The Slurry/Liquid-fed Ceramic Melter Vitrification Process is being used to immobilize the high-level radioactive wastes temporarily stored at these sites. These two projects were chosen to illustrate the systematic methods were used to define the requirements, develop the design, construct the facilities, and certify the product such that the regulatory and disposal requirements imposed by statute and DOE/Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC)/Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) policy and regulation can be met.
