Abstract:

The DOE will design and develop a new fleet of casks to transport spent fuel using innovative approaches to optimize the cask design. Preliminary casks designs indicate capacity increases of up to four and one-half and two and one-half times that of currently available legal-weight truck cask designs and rail/barge casks designs, respectively. By using increased cask capacities and improved cask handling capabilities, fewer shipments and less handling time can be expected. This cask development is being performed by the Department of Energy's (DOE) Office of Civilian Radioactive Waste Management (OCRWM). OCRWM was assigned the responsibility for developing a waste-management system for the disposal of the Nation's nuclear waste. The transportation program for OCRWM is required to transport the waste safely to either a final disposal facility or a temporary storage facility.
