Abstract:

The amount of spent nuclear fuel move in the U.S. in recent years has increased due to a number of government actions. One such action was the passage of the Nuclear Waste Policy Act which requires the DOE to develop a repository for the permanent disposal of spent fuel. The DOE is studying a site located in Yucca Mountain, Nevada. If this site is found suitable to store the radioactive waste, the transportation of spent fuel will increase dramatically throughout this country. Shipments of spent fuel are required to use interstate highways or preferred routes selected by a state routing agency. This paper examines available models that could be used to select the preferred routes.
