Nuclear Fuel Waste Management in Canada?A Regulatory Perspective

by Larry Chamney, Atomic Energy Control Board, Canada,

Document Type: Proceeding Paper

Part of: High Level Radioactive Waste Management 1990

Abstract:

This paper briefly identifies the process for development of a high-level radioactive waste repository in Canada, and the regulatory requirements and safety criteria which have been established for the assessment and review of the disposal concept. Means of enhancing the confidence of decision makers in the results of safety assessments of high-level waste facilities are discussed from a regulatory perspective. Robust scoping and bounding analyses and extensive use of natural analogues are noted as being valuable complements to detailed predictive modelling and focussed scientific studies.
