Abstract:

This paper addresses the use of a loose unbonded plastic covering polyethylene encasement for protection of cast and ductile iron pipe in an extremely corrosive soil. The case study in the San Diego area involves six separate inspections of parallel lines - a 16-inch cast iron and a 24-inch ductile iron pipeline. Detailed examination of the exposed pipelines was made on each inspection as well as analysis of the soil and the loose polyethylene encasement. Numerous individuals from outside the Ductile Iron Pipe Research Association (DIPRA) attended and participated in the inspections. Photographs of the pipelines were taken with a report prepared for each inspection.
