Abstract:

Intermediate states of structural systems (prior to system collapse and after component loss) are focused herein. This area relates to important issues such as redundancy and damage tolerability. It is pointed out that quantifications of redundancy of structural systems are largely dependent on the purposes of such applications. A probabilistic component oriented measure of redundancy is used herein. As an illustration a highway bridge design investigation presented concludes that the conventional equal member size design provides reasonable, although not optimal, redundancy in terms of residual system reliability with respect to accident conditions.
