Abstract:

The objective of this paper is to present examples of system optimization and reliability in bridge inelastic design. The optimum solution is defined as the bridge of least weight, subject to a prescribed set of constraints on the design and behavior variables. Computer programs are used to perform both the inelastic bridge optimization and reliability analyses. Examples of system optimization of brittle and ductile truss bridges and reliability analysis of girder bridge models are presented.
