Abstract:

Lack of an available detour around construction of a major viaduct spurred city officials in Reno, Nev. to build a bridge nearby to serve the purpose. Although funded separately, the permanent detour was folded into the Wells Avenue Viaduct Replacement Project schedule, which had been fast tracked from the start. It was the third element in the project, which included reconstruction of the existing roadway and bridge directly under the new viaduct. The designers met their deadlines by using computer aided drafting (CAD) to churn out 358 final drawings in only 27 weeks. Bid documents for the new viaduct, six lanes and 1,727 ft long, were produced for both steel and concrete alternatives. CAD eased the process of transmitting information between the three design firms and their offices in three western states.
