Abstract:

An approach for evaluating uplift and dam foundation conditions, which resulted from the initial phases of an Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI) study is presented. An earlier study found that uplift data is very limited and that misconceptions concerning uplift are widespread. This study includes the development of guidelines for core drilling, piezometer installation and laboratory testing for stability analyses of concrete gravity dams, field and laboratory work at a variety of concrete gravity dams, and collection of uplift data for different foundation conditions.
