Abstract:

This paper describes a joint venture between the United States Bureau of Reclamation and the State of Wyoming to increase the storage capacity and power generation capacity of Buffalo Bill Dam near Cody, Wyoming. Buffalo Bill Dam was originally built in the early 1900's to provide irrigation water for the rapidly growing agricultural industry in the area. The current construction raises the crest of the dam 25 ft, enlarges the spillway, rehabilitates the outlet works, rehabilitates the existing Shoshone Powerplant, pressurizes an existing underground conduit, and adds a new semi-outdoor powerplant and a new energy dissipation structure with space for a future generating unit. Rehabilitation of Shoshone Powerplant involves replacing Unit 3 with a new 3 MW vertical francis-type generating unit. The new powerplant will house three 6 MW vertical francis-type generating units.
