Abstract:

This paper describes the design of flap-type spillway crest gates for the Upper Mechanicville Project, located on the Hudson River near Mechanicville, New York. These gates are being provided to raise the regulated headwater level at the powerhouse to increase energy production from the existing facility. Six gates will be installed in three pairs with a combined crest length of 666 ft. Physical model testing of the gate was undertaken to confirm the design shape of the gate to avoid induced negative pressures on the gate. Also of interest is the design of the associated aeration under the gate. Special attention was given to the sealing arrangements which were particularly difficult. Since the gates are required to operate in winter, a heating system was developed. The gates and their associated hydraulic control system are designed to be 'fail-safe' and will not raise the existing flood plain of the Hudson River.
