Clay Joints in the Foundation of Dkhila Dam

Abstract:

The stability analysis performed at the beginning of construction, taking into account the shear test results of the foundation claystone showed insufficient safety factors against sliding. The cross-section of the dam had to be modified in order to obtain required safety factors. During excavation works, sub-horizontal clay joints were discovered in the foundation rock. Additional field investigations by boreholes and pits, together with a detailed geological mapping of the excavation resulted in a comprehensive modelling of the foundation, taking into account a number of continuous clay joints. Laboratory tests were carried out with the fill material of the clay joints and the stability analysis of the dam was revised. Foundation treatment and the instrumentation design were adapted to provide and monitor uplift reduction.
