Abstract:

A 70-year old riveted penstock was analyzed to determine its actual design strength in response to the discovery of significant pressure rises under normal operating conditions due to waterhammer. The analysis and evaluation process involved a review of other riveted penstocks and various design criteria and codes in use at the time the penstock was constructed. This research was valuable in that it has yielded some insight into old standards as compared to present day practice. It also has shed some light on concerns about the safety of these old systems.
