Abstract:

The New York State Dam is located on the Mohawk River near its confluence with the Hudson River. Downstream from the dam, the river flow is divided into six channels as the water passes around some islands. As a condition of the license for redevelopment, the powerhouse arrangement must be such that the downstream flow distribution to the six channels is maintained during construction and operation of the project. Because of the complexity of the distribution patterns downstream from the dam, a distorted physical model, with a vertical scale of 1:12 and horizontal scale of 1:60, was used to develop the arrangement. Powerhouse location, required excavation, and cofferdam locations were determined so that distribution downstream was in acceptable agreement with the base conditions.
