Abstract:

Ertan will be a major hydroelectric project on the Yalong River in China. The project consists of a 240 m high arch dam, two tunnel spillways, an overflow spillway, mid- and low-level outlet works, a plunge pool and a tunnel for conveying logs around the dam. The underground power facilities consist of an intake structure, water conductors power chamber, a transformer chamber, a tailrace surge chamber, and two tail race tunnels. With an installed capacity of six 550 MW units and an annual production of 17,000 gwh, the main purpose of the project is power generation. Power will be transmitted through four-circuit, 500-kV transmission lines to the Sichuan and Yunnan provincial grids. Environmental impact studies and a resettlement program for 29,000 people have been prepared.
