Design of Steel Tunnel Liners

by Edgar T. Moore, Harza Engineering Co, United States,

Document Type: Proceeding Paper

Part of: Waterpower '89

Abstract:

The paper presents a detailed development of the fundamental equations for internal pressure design, considering an elastic interaction between the steel liner and the surrounding rock continuum. The equations consider factors such as steel liner thickness, thermal effects, thickness of concrete backfill, a zone of fissured rock contiguous to the tunnel opening, and the modulus of deformation and Poisson's ratio for the surrounding undisturbed rock beyond the fissured zone. The paper also discusses methods currently used in the analysis and design of steel tunnel liners for resistance to buckling from external pressure when dewatered for inspection and maintenance.
