Abstract:

Four small hydro plants in Northern California were selected by Pacific Gas and Electric Company to upgrade and automate their trashrack raking equipment during the 1988 maintenance outages. The retrofit of the four intake structures had to be performed on a 'fast-track' basis so as not to interrupt scheduled maintenance operations and not interfere with resumption of service after the maintenance outage was complete. Therefore, the new automatic trashraking devices required no major modifications to the existing intake structures. Installation and testing had to be completed within two weeks. A liquidated damages clause, for late completion was also included in the contract documents to insure timely completion of the work. The automatic trashraking equipment, supplied and installed for the four hydroelectric plants was performed by Atlas-Polar Company, Ltd., and is discussed in detail in this paper.
