Abstract:

Cavitation damage to the turbine runner blades, to the draft tube liner, and to the runner hub requires extensive welding repair. The traditional repair method is to gouge out the damaged material then fill the void with some grade of stainless steel. This gouging and filling with a very high temperature in very localized area causes residual stress fields in the parent material. The combination of the stress field and the high cavitation impact could reduce the machinery material's ability to resist further cavitation attack. This paper investigates the thermal and cavitation effects of cavitation damage repair.
