Abstract:

This project is located in the City of San Bernardino (Southern California). The addition of a second afterbay for the Devil Canyon Powerplant has been in the planning stages since October, 1983, and was approved in July, 1988. The Second Afterbay will enhance the power plant enlargement which is currently in progress. Two additional 80 MW units are being added to the two existing 60 MW units at this plant as a part of the East Branch Enlargement of the California Aqueduct. The Second Afterbay will provide additional storage to enable the Devil Canyon Powerplant to provide peaking capacity and spinning reserve, and respond to frequency changes in the energy grid. This paper presents the history, operation, and economics of the Devil Canyon Second Afterbay.
