Abstract:

Several inherent characteristics of all current numerical simulations of the unsteady flow equations prevent total confidence in their use. Inconsistencies within the numerical procedures can propagate, causing false solutions or nonconvergence. This is especially noticeable around low flows, and changes of regime or flow rate. Current techniques tend to bypass this problem to achieve a solution at the expenses of accuracy. The tremendous amount of iterations also require trade-offs between accuracy and speed. To tackle this problem, a model was developed based upon integration of numeric analysis and error trapping with the laws of hydraulics. This paper discusses the application of Numerical analysis to the Saint-Venant equations of unsteasdy, one dimensional flow in open channels.
