Abstract:

This paper presents an overview of the Federal Emergency Management Agency's (FEMA) efforts to automate flood risk mapping performed in support of the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP). At present, FEMA is engaged in prototyping applications of remote sensing and Geographic Information Systems (GIS) technologies to perform routine data collection and mapping tasks. In addition, FEMA is evaluating new products and services that can be provided to users of NFIP risk data from resulting digital data bases.
