Abstract:

During raising of King Talal Dam in Jordan in 1986, the existing intake wheel gate provided at the inlet of the project Low Level Outlet Works (LLOW) tunnel was found inadequate to withstand new increased head and was replaced by a bulkhead. In order to minimize the time period for which the LLOW tunnel would be shut down, the bulkhead had to be closed and reopened under water. This paper describes the scheme for accomplishing under-water operation of the bulkhead.
