Abstract:

A new and efficient hydrodynamic model is used to simulate flows in the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta, California. The model solves the one-dimensional shallow water equations for flow in a channel network using a semi-implicit finite difference method at the interior grid points and an extension of the fixed grid method of characteristics at the junctions. The two step procedure is unconditionally stable and allows individual channel segments to be uncoupled from the channel network so that no large matrix solution is required. The paper describes the numerical details of the model algorithm and presents the results of comparing model simulations with available measurements of water surface elevations in the Delta.
