Riprap Stability in Channel Bends

Document Type: Proceeding Paper

Part of: Hydraulic Engineering

Abstract:

A systematic test series is underway in a large test channel to define the stability of riprap on the outer bank of channel bends. A 'practical equilibrium' concept is used in these tests to defined failure versus stability. Gradations ranging from uniform to nonuniform are being tested at different blanket thicknesses. Velocity measurements are taken to define the imposed forces over the side slope at the point of failure. Results of the stability tests were compared to a riprap sizing method that has been used in previous studies by the author.
