Partnership in Environmental Design for Brush Creek Flood Control

Abstract:

Brush Creek drains a highly urbanized area in metropolitan Kansas City. A large physical model was used to develop a channel modification design for flood control. The Parks and Recreation Department of Kansas City, Missouri, proposed additional environmental treatment at City cost. Additional model studies of the proposed environmental design were funded by the City to assure the flood control features were not compromised. This paper describes the project setting, the coordination between the numerous interests and the use of the physical model to develop the design for a Federal flood control project and evaluate the City's proposed environmental design.
