Abstract:

The National Weather Service computer programs DWOPER (Operational Dynamic Wave Model) and DAMBRK (Dam-break) are one-dimensional models using an implicit finite difference method of solution for the complete one-dimensional equations of unsteady flow, the Saint-Venant Equations. With DAMBRK, only one stream may be modeled; lateral inflows are represented by discharge hydrographs and are treated as internal boundary conditions. This paper explores different methods by which DAMBRK may be applied to obtain the most accurate results and identifies the errors in stage computation for an example case. The accuracy of the results is based on the results obtained by DWOPER, since that model includes the sophistication to model stream junctions.
