Continued Development of the Columbia Basin Project?A Status Report

Abstract:

The Columbia Basin Project is located in central Washington State and encompasses approximately 1 million irrigable acres. Water from the project delivery system was first applied in 1952 to about 66,000 acres. Since that time, the major canals have been extended, relift pumping plants have been built, and additional laterals have been constructed. The project currently serves 557,000 acres, or about half of the available acreage. Development of additional lands essentially ceased by the mid-1970s for several reasons, including a shifting of national priorities and limited funding. The Bureau of Reclamation is currently investigating the feasibility of continued development in the basin. A partial summary of the investigation is presented in this paper.
