Abstract:

A numerical model for simulating nitrate transport coupled to microbial activity in the saturated zone is presented. A coupled system of equations describes the transport and microbial utilization of dissolved nitrate, organic carbon and oxygen. The model is used to explore hydrologic and chemical-microbial factors that influence the fate of nitrate below the water table.
