Abstract:

The subject matter of this paper is electro-osmosis in fine grained soils. A simple instrument has been developed to simulate this phenomena in the laboratory. A series of experiments were conducted under controlled conditions with kaolinite clay to identify the critical parameters of electro-osmosis. Influences of voltage and current reversal were studies. The cations Na+ and Li+ were compared as electro-osmotic flow enhancing ions. Li+ was found more effective compared to Na+. Optimum voltage for distilled water flow was determined.
