Radon Resistant New Construction Practices

Abstract:

This paper highlights the basic principles for building radon-resistant houses and it groups the construction techniques into four categories, i.e., the barrier approach, soil ventilation approach, the pressure modification approach, and the air cleaning approach. The underlying principle in applying any of the approaches is to prevent or minimize radon entry into the living areas of a house. The focus of this paper is on the first two categories. The barrier approach details the variety of methods for closing and/or sealing both the substructure and the superstructure of houses and discusses the specific purpose and effectiveness of each method. The soil ventilation approach includes discussion of the several techniques for removing radon from beneath the foundation of houses and addresses the relative effectiveness of passive versus active soil ventilation systems.
