Abstract:

In Coachella Valley, California, where rainfall averages only 3 inches annually, approximately 80,000 acres of crop land and 65 golf courses provide winter recreation and winter fruits and vegetables for much of the continent. This has been possible only through effective management of the ground water basin throughout the history of development in the area. Since 1973, a replenishment program has been underway to recharge the basin with Colorado River water through exchange and advance delivery agreements between Coachella Valley Water District, Desert Water Agency, and Metropolitan Water District of Southern California. So far, approximately 1 million acre-feet of imported water has been recharged.
