Abstract:

Traditional water supplies supporting central California coastal agriculture are derived from the underflow in alluvial stream beds. Such supplies have been adequate in the past but are being severely stressed by coastal urban development. Optimization of yield from the aquifers requires balancing urban and agricultural demand with uncertain supplies maintained by an increasingly variable climate. Yield enhancement is possible through watershed management and selective impoundment.
