Manufacturing Development Requires New Graduate-Level Education

Abstract:

Manufacturing engineering education varies widely with different countries. In some it is looked upon as a non-academic subject, while in others a large number of engineers are being trained in rather narrow specialized concentrations in manufacturing. But a common problem is that manufacturing education, especially at the graduate-level, does not meet the demands of manufacturing today. This paper discusses how manufacturing is changing and points out what needs to be done in manufacturing graduate education to meet these changes, especially for the developing countries.
