Abstract:

A survey was conducted recently in conjunction with a project located in the San Francisco Bay Area to ascertain the general pile driving practice in stiff overconsolidated clays interbedded with gravel or dense granular layers. The results of this survey suggests that while there is general agreement among the firms on pile drivability in gravelly soils, there are subtle to fundamental differences in the approach and practice during pile driving. Differences relate to evaluation of pile lengths, use of and interpretation of wave equation and pile analyzer data, predrilling practices and field assessment of the pile breakage.
