Abstract:

This paper is concerned with the determination of the axial ultimate capacity of a rigid pier on the basis of the theory of perfect plasticity. As an application of the upper bound theorem on plastic collapse, a computational method is developed for the calculation of limit loads for this class of axisymmetric problems. Both the Von Mises as well as the Drucker-Prager models are considered in this investigation. Typical results are presented on the evaluation of the base capacity and lateral side pressure of the foundation.
