Abstract:

Historical development of improvements to Winkler's spring subgrade model are traced. The improvements consist of various ways to provide shear coupling between the springs. It is shown that these improved models correspond to elastic continua to which simplifying assumptions have been applied. Simplified elastic continua show promise as subgrade models in a wide variety of soil-structure interaction problems, as they are reasonably accurate yet relatively simple to use. Work to date has been concentrated in the area of mat foundations.
