Abstract:

An investigation of some techniques suggested to reduce friction at the soil-structure interface, for example plastic sheet on sand, is presented, and a model proposed for characterizing such interface behavior. A series of direct shear tests were performed on various combinations of soils and construction materials. These included: clay-plastic sheet, clay-smooth concrete, clay-rough concrete, sand-plastic sheet, sand-smooth concrete, and sand-rough concrete. Each interface combination was tested over a range of normal stresses chosen to include the typical stresses to which a residential foundation is subjected. Shear strength and stiffness parameters were determined for each interface combination and the unloading response was observed.
