Abstract:

Soils subject to hydroconsolidation, commonly referred to as collapsible soils, have a potential to undergo significant volume reductions upon wetting, with or without additional loading in excess of overburden pressure. These soils are found throughout the Antelope Valley Region of Southern California. Unacceptable total and differential foundation settlements on collapsible soils may result without remedial site work or special foundation design. The estimated amount of collapse can be predicted by a series of modified oedometer tests, and a profile of potential hydroconsolidation as a function of depth can be developed.
