Vertical Response Data from the Dominion Road Bridge Test

Abstract:

In January and February of 1985, two bridges were tested in New Zealand using simulated earthquake loads. The objective was to determine the in-situ seismic response of two reinforced concrete bridges, one of which was straight and of simple form; the other was curved and continuous over many spans. This paper describes some of the results of testing the curved, multispan structure known as the Dominion Road bridge. The snap-back or quick-release method was used to simulate the effect of a moderate earthquake on this structure and time histories of acceleration and displacement were recorded during each event. Natural frequencies, damping ratios and mode shapes of 13 vertical response modes and two torsional response modes of the curved bridge were determined.
