Local Wind Pressures on Roofs

by Theodore Stathopoulos, Concordia Univ, Canada,

Document Type: Proceeding Paper

Part of: Structural Design, Analysis and Testing

Abstract:

The paper reviews the results of the most recent research studies in the evaluation of wind pressure coefficients for the design of roof cladding elements. The effect of roof geometry and the influence of eaves and parapets on the wind-induced suctions on roofs are also discussed. The provisions of wind standards and codes of practice are examined and some problems associated with their application are highlighted. A more flexible and accurate approach for the evaluation of local wind pressures on roofs, based on time series analysis, is described in the paper.
