Abstract:

The wake induced acrosswind behavior of circular cross-section structures, such as industrial chimney, has been studied for many years using wind tunnel models. Due to the relaxation of Reynolds No. in the scaled model test, the experimental results bear little relevance to what happen in the full scale situation. An artificial wake generation technique was adopted by adding two-dimensional roughness elements on the model surface to stimulate a supercritical Reynolds No. wake (Re > 3.5?106), in a low Reynolds number wind tunnel flow field. Through measurements of circumferential pressure distribution, it was found that this technique could be effective at Reynolds No. as low as 2.27?104. Two sets of aeroelastic chimney models were built with devcon material to simulate the acrosswind behavior of two documented full scale chimneys.
