Abstract:

Analyzing the geography, geology, flora and infrastructure in eight western states is a massive geotechnical project being undertaken for the military. More than 190,000 square miles have been analyzed through research and field verification for the U.S. Air Force. The goal is to identify potential locations for deployment of intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) systems in underground storage, tractor/trailers, rail carriers and silos. The framework for managing this project includes decision analysis, which replaces subjective analyses with statistical methods of quantifying and comparing risks; the largest Geographic Information System (GIS) applied to date; and several rapid field characterization methods developed for this project. The enormous database assembled for the Air Force studies is being shared with other agencies. One example is immediate notification about inadequate bridges and roads.
