The Second Generation Space Station

Abstract:

Several aspects of optimizing space operations have been examined to identify key components in establishing a more efficient space infrastructure. A second generation space station situated in a halo orbit at Libration Point 1 (L1) is postulated. The station's design should optimize human performance, should be as self-sufficient as possible, and should be located such that it will be easily accessible from low Earth orbit (LEO) as well as efficiently accessible to other existing space sites and anticipated future missions sites: An L1 station is easily accessed from LEO, is well-situated for servicing geosynchronous Earth orbit (GEO), and provides low delta-V access to both the moon and Mars.
