Abstract:

A flume study was conducted to develop and improve the thermal dilution method of discharge measurement in trapezodial channels. The study was performed in an indoor channel with dischages ranging from 2 cfs to 4 cfs and Froude numbers ranging from 0.28 to 0.56. Improved vertical mixing was achieved through the use of a passive turbulence inducer placed perpendicular to the flow. The mixing distance required for the injectate to be adequately mixed in the flow was a function of the flow depth and the channel roughness expressed in terms of Manning's n.
