Abstract:

The paper discusses the formulation of a steady-state coupled hydrodynamic/water quality model of Chesapeake Bay. The intent of this model was to provide insight into the processes and factors influencing eutrophication and anoxia in the bay. Specifically the model was to investigate; the relative impacts of point versus nonpoint source nutrient loadings; the importance and magnitude of tributary loadings delivered to the main stem bay; the importance of sediment oxygen demand versus water column respiration processes; which, if any, nutrient is limiting algal growth in the bay; and to provide input into the direction of future scientific field investigations and modeling efforts. The paper covers model calibration, results and projections.
