Abstract:

Sediments are a natural part of the riverine and estuarine environment. However, if the sediment load changes or bed sediment type occur, direct and sometimes detrimental and sometimes positive environmental impacts occur. There is a need to synthesize and summarize the present knowledge in this area and to identify research needs. This paper is a preliminary summary of the work towards these goals of the Task Committee and presents a framework based on bed material type, and the type of aquatic habitat associated with various bed-material sizes. Impacts of changing sediment load or streamflow on aquatic habitat are reviewed.
