Abstract:

The flow pattern in a meander bend is described in terms of the primary flow, secondary flow, and cross-stream flow. Secondary flow which is normal to the primary flow contributes to lateral sediment transport but not lateral discharge with respect to the primary flow direction. The angle between the primary flow and channel centerline contributes to cross-stream discharge, variation in superelevation, and redistribution of the longitudinal shear. The complicated processes of meander bend migration are simplified to give an overview form the viewpoint of the streamwise variation of secondary flow which also reflects the pattern of flow development.
